A big time was had by all on Saturday, Oct. 27, as a great group of mushroom log growing enthusiasts came together to learn how to grow their own edible mushrooms. Chris Medlin, our “Mushroom Guy” taught us techniques and tips for how to successfully grow mushrooms on a deciduous log. The two types we used were NC Wild Shiitake and Blue Oyster Mushrooms. The storms have availed most of us with 4-5’ logs to work with. Holes were drilled, sawdust spawn was pushed into each hole and later covered with a thin layer of melted wax over the holes. Folks took their inoculated logs home to care for and harvest.
What fun on a fall day!
